Research Group Molecular Schizophrenia Research

Phenomenological aspects of schizophrenic psychosis are very diverse and are therefore investigated from different scientific perspectives. From the restricted view of biological psychiatry psychosis is seen as dysfunctions of the central nervous system with a comprehensible underlying neurobiological and molecular basis. This understanding results in two main focuses of interest within our work group of molecular schizophrenia research:

1. Research focus: Pathogenesis

We aim at a better understanding and description of underlying neurobiological mechanisms by combining methods of biochemistry, molecular- and behavioural biology in appropriate animal models as well as defining neurobiological markers in affected patients.

2. Research focus: Therapy

Optimizing innovative pharmacological therapy and improving the understanding of underlying neurobiological effects of non-pharmacological therapeutic approaches are important milestones in order to achieve considerable progress in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenic psychosis.
