It is the same for all diseases which are caused through the norma! aging process, a complex crossing of specific biological factors, general physical changes in age as well as specific psychological and social aging changes, call for a special medical approach. More than 20% of the aging population suffer mental problems. The most common and frequent problems are depression and dementia.
The Division of Geriatrie Psychiatry consists of a clinical unit for in-patient treatment (3 wards with 44 beds) day care treatment (12 places) and an out-patient unit (Memory Clinic).
The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry is part of the European Alzheimer Disease Consortium (EADC) and the National Competence Network for Dementia (KND), which is financed by the BMBF. Within the Network research projects are carried out and guidelines are being evaluated for diagnostics and therapy, as well as new standards to carry out clinical studies. A research focus of the Division is on the development of effective medical treatment for patients with neurodegenerative dementia, especially Alzheimer disease. This includes investigator-initiated trials as well as innovative multicenter clinical trials.
