Substance use has major medical, social and economic negative consequences. Millions of people within the EU suffer from these consequences. Many studies proof that prevention and treatment in SUD’s are highly cost-effective. Evidence based practice in prevention and treatment of SUD’s is available. Prevention, treatment and after care delivered by medically well trained professionals is essential, because these medical professionals are daily confronted with SUD’s. Social and economic costs can be very much diminished by cost effective medical interventions. Evidence based medical education in managing dependence problems therefore have a very high priority. Development and implementation of medical educational programs and curricula is urgently needed
