This outpatient unit attends to the early recognition and early intervention of schizophrenic psychoses. Disorders belonging to the schizophrenia spectrum most frequently occur during early adulthood. This period of live (end of highschool or during the studies/apprenticeship) is very sensitive to a variety of stressors and important life decisions are met during these years. These might be impaired by a severe psychiatric illness. Therefore attempts to detect any psychopathological alteration as early as possible are necessary in order to start treatment interventions and to keep the chances of occupational and social rehabilitation. The longtime epidemiological research of the former director of the institute, Prof. Dr. Dr. Häfner, and his work group on the early course of schizophrenia provided the establishment of specific assessment instruments.
In our outpatient unit (PD Dr. Mathias Zink) the risk of a transition to psychosis will be assessed through a clinical-physical examination and the use of these specific psychometric instruments. Patients that report early symptoms of psychosis, e.g. reduction of performance, changes of mood, thinking or interpersonal behaviour, delusional fears or perception disorders, can get an appointment in the outpatient unit through the general practitioner. The outpatient unit is interlinked with further specific facilities within the psychiatric clinic, which target diagnosis and therapy of psychoses. Therefore an ideal subsequent treatment can be enabled, which can either be inpatient (psychosis ward 5A) or partly inpatient (psychiatric day clinic). |
