About the Department

The mission of the Division of Biostatistics of the CIMH is roughly the same as that of the departments of medical statistics and computer science to be found in the medical schools of the majority of universities in the German speaking countries. This means that our most important task is to provide expertise in all quantitative and statistical aspects of research projects carried out in the clinical and experimental departments of the CIMH. A major source of that expertise is our own research in a number of areas of statistical methodology of relevance for promoting the use of high-standard, rgorous quantitative methods in the disciplines making up our institutional environment. Since virtually all more advanced statistical methodology is of little if any use for real applications without the availability of appropriate computational tools, adapting, extending and validating complex statistical software is another basic task incumbent on our group.
Last but not least do we take full technical responsibility for the local data network (LAN) of the CIMH as a whole. The number of PC's and workstations integrated in our LAN exceeds 450 and is increasing further up steadily. Recently, the network has been upgraded by introducing wireless LAN technology which is mainly used for purposes of integrating portables (notebooks, PDA's).
