Research Group Schizophrenia Research

The Unit’s research fields are the general, clinical and genetic epidemiology of and psychopathological/biological multi-level research into schizophrenia and schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including genetic aspects. All the research steps arising from the results of the ABC Schizophrenia Study (Project S1, funded by the German Research Association as part of the Special Research Branch 258 from 1987 to 1998 and as an independent project from 1999 to 2002) have been accomplished, including application of genetic-epidemiological approaches and development of strategies of predicting schizophrenia risk.

Main research topics

Protective effects of oestrogen. Oestrogen delays illness onset in premenopausal women and leads to a second peak of incidence and a significantly greater severity of illness in women than in men of the same age. The underlying neurobiological mechanism is a reduced sensitivity of central D2 receptors caused by oestrogen.
Controlled assessment of onset and early course of schizophrenia
Prospective investigation of medium-term course of schizophrenia
Ecological distribution of incidence, symptoms and course of schizophrenia
Causal associations of substance abuse and schizophrenia (in either direction)
A multi-level model of the determinants of the social course
Comparison of symptoms and risk factors in first-episode schizophrenia and related disorders across the life-cycle
