The Role of Microglial Activation in Alcohol Use Disorder
My research focuses on how alcohol-induced microglial activation contributes to the development of habitual and goal-directed behaviour in alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using a rodent model of chronic intermittent ethanol exposure, I investigate how withdrawal-induced neuroinflammation—particularly in the dorsomedial and dorsolateral striatum—affects behavioural control. I am also exploring whether psilocybin, a serotonergic psychedelic with anti-inflammatory properties, can modulate microglial activity and restore goal-directed behaviour. This work aims to identify novel therapeutic targets for improving outcomes in AUD.
