The research group „Therapy and Care Research for Addiction Disorders” belongs to the Department of Addictive Behavior and Addiction Medicine at the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) and to the Addiction Department of the Centrum of Psychiatry Nordbaden in Wiesloch (Zentrum für Psychiatrie (ZfP) Nordbaden).

Our goals are:

  1. Investigating the interactions of mental health services with people suffering from substance use disorders (SUD).
  2. Developing innovative treatment strategies for patients suffering from substance use disorders including their family members as well as establishing them into routine health services provision, evaluating, and optimizing the respective processes.

Therefore, subgroups of patients that benefit least from offered health services („heavy users”) are compared with subgroups of patients that profits from these offered health services. Aside from describing the clinical risk profile, attitudes towards the treatments offered and perceived barriers to seek help for heavy users are explored.

Lack of insight into illness and fear of stigmatization were identified as important barriers for treatment seeking. In addition, offered treatments and subjective treatment goals do not necessarily match. Research suggests that improving illness awareness, reducing stigmatization and considering personal treatment goals improves treatment effectiveness. The research group will focus on these aspects.

Additionally, research of the past years found that addictive disorders not only affect the patients suffering from them, but also their family members and especially their children. Therefore our research group focus on developing and evaluating specific in- and outpatient treatment psychotherapy programs for parents suffering from addictive disorders.

The cooperation between the two departments of addiction medicine of the ZfP Nordbaden/Wiesloch and of the CIMH in the previous years laid the groundwork for excellent opportunities of therapy and care research in the field of substance use disorders.
