New Building K 3
Innovative and sustainable
Sponsored by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Family, Women and Senior Citizens Baden-Württemberg and the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg.
Most of the treatment places in K 3 belong to the Clinic for Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine and to the Adolescent Centre, which was set up in this form for the first time in Germany. Here, adolescents and young adults are cared for according to the innovative track concept. In the important life phase of adolescence (approx. 15 to 25 years), patients with borderline personality disorder and/or post-traumatic stress disorder are supported by a permanent team of doctors, nurses and therapists.
In addition to the Adolescent Centre and other facilities of the CIMH, K 3 is also a recruitment site for the National Cohort, a nationwide long-term population study, in cooperation with the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) and the University of Heidelberg.
Modern energy concept

The energy concept of the building in K 3 is also innovative and above all resource-saving. The new building is cooled in summer and heated in winter by means of the earth's temperature. Reinforced concrete piles were sunk eleven metres deep into the ground for this purpose. Pipes are embedded in the piles, through which water circulates as a heat transfer medium. As a result, less district heating is needed in winter. In summer, pleasant temperatures prevail in the rooms.
