Under News you will find regularly information events on our homepage. Take the chance to get to know ZPP Mannheim personally!

The training starts in February. You may start practical work earlier, but 6 months at the earliest before beginning the theoretical training.

There are nine training positions available per class.

Applications are possible at any time, early applications are appreciated! Candidates are selected continuously considering the qualifications and invited to a selection interview in Mannheim.

Detailed Information about the selection process can be found here.

Training covers at least 4,200 training hours in total and is divided into the following training components: Theoretical training, practical work I and II, practical training, supervision, personal experience, and supplementary studies.

Training ends after the completion of all required training contents and prerequisites with a state examination (Approbation).

Training is offered both as three-year full-time training and as five-year on-the-job training. The latter can be taken while working. During the full-time training it is not recommended to work additional jobs.

Theoretical Training

Theoretical seminars usually take place at the outpatient clinics of the CPP Mannheim, namely CPP Mannheim at ZI or Otto Selz Institute of Mannheim University.

Theoretical seminars usually take place at the outpatient clinics of the CPP Mannheim, namely CPP Mannheim at ZI or Otto Selz Institute of Mannheim University.

There are seminars that give insight  into therapy approaches such as psychodynamic therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, systemic therapy, and those of the so called “Third Wave”.

The seminars are offered yearly. If you are not able to participate in one of the seminars you can easily make up for it the year after. Some of the seminars are compulsory for the intermediate examination. You will be informed about all of the seminars at the beginning of the course.

The theoretical training is conducted by renowned teachers. They tend to teach both practice oriented training as well as training based on the current state-of-the-art all-examination-relevant content. They also teach the foundation material for practical work and practical training.

Practical Work

You may begin practical work up to six months before starting with theoretical training. A signed contract is required. The beginning depends on the corresponding cooperating institution.

Practical work is performed as internship in hospitals and other facilities cooperating with the CPP, recognized by the Stuttgart Governing Council for this part of the training or fulfilling the criteria to be recognized according to PsychThG (Paragraph 10 No. 4).

Here you can find a list of our current cooperating facilities.

Traineeships in cooperating hospitals, outpatient clinics and practices are awarded directly by agreement between training participants and the manager of the cooperating facility. The studies management office of the CPP Mannheim must always be consulted before starting to work in a facility.

The compensation of practical work is regulated by the Psychotherapeutical Act. Clinics offer compensation where possible. Please get in touch with the cooperating contact person directly.

The waiting period can vary extremely. A long planning phase makes it easier for clinics. Of course, in some cases short-term solutions can be offered, too.

Practical Training

The aim of this training component is to acquire practical competencies in diagnostics, indications, conceptualization of cases, problem solving and treatment planning, as well as the conduction of programs, the formation of an effective therapist-patient-relationship, the evaluation and documentation of progress, and the consideration of scientific knowledge and respecting ethical and legal necessities.

Practical training takes place at the outpatient clinics of the CPP Mannheim, namely CPP Mannheim at ZI or Otto-Selz-Institute of Mannheim University.

Qualified supervisors with many years of experience in child and adolescent psychotherapeutic practice and clinics who are also behavioral therapy trainers are in charge of supervising training therapies.

Personal Experience

A total of 120 hours of behavioral therapy personal experience distributed over three years must be participated in. It will focus on subjects such as social learning, relationships from the personal-biographical perspective, personal plan structures, and emotional experiences in which the therapeutic process is emphasized.

Every personal experience workshop is led by a personal experience trainer. Exercises take usually place in small groups and pairs. Thereby therapeutic experiences and behaviors during practical training are integrated into therapeutic case work of participants.

Most of personal experience is conducted in a large group with all of the participants of a training class together. A smaller part of personal experience (40 hours) will be offered in the form of modules with differing participants.

Personal experience may not be proven to directors to whom there is a business or other dependency relationship (e.g. examinations). Very rarely it is recommended to training candidates to take additional individual personal experience. This may be the case if the therapeutic process is critically endangered because of one’s therapeutic experience and behaviors.

Supplementary Studies

930 training hours can be completed by optional and external activities, preparation and rework of theoretical seminars, supervision, and therapy sessions during practical training.

Any training can be taken into account once there is a committed training contract between the CPP Mannheim and the training candidate.

An intermediate examination takes place after the first part of training. In the intermediate examination the training candidates’ theoretical knowledge is tested by discussing case documentation drawn up by the candidates during their practical work. Individual feedback of the candidates’ current training progress will be given.

The Stuttgart Governing Council is in charge of admission to the final state examination after the candidates have presented the required proof of corresponding prerequisites.

For details see examinations. (Link to 2.3 is following)

There will be detailed information given about the examination process and required documents to be submitted. Practical work and its supervision will give a good basis for examination preparations.

Contents of all seminars are examination relevant and as such prepare for it. Additionally, there will be seminars specifically for the preparation of examinations.

Study Fees

The tuition to be paid by participants for their training amounts to €14,400, both for the three- and the five-year training. The training tuition is charged as a monthly fee of €400 over a 36-month period. All expenses for theoretical training and personal experience are included.

For details see fees overview.

Additional costs result from optional individual supervision (5,000 Euro), group supervision (2,500 Euro), and the final state examination (425 Euro). The earnings in the practical training allow a complete refinancing of the training costs (theory and supervision costs). A detailed breakdown of costs and earnings, see fees overview.

There are various options of financial funding during the training, i.e., revenues during practical training, BAföG, a part-time job, an education loan program, or advance training loans.

For more Details see financing options.
