Researchers whose work is cited particularly frequently in specialist circles and who are considered particularly influential are identified each year in the “Highly Cited Researchers” ranking. Prof. Dr. Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg, Chairman of the Board of the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) in Mannheim and Medical Director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, is once again a CIMH-Researcher on the list. This means that he is also one of the world’s most influential scientists in 2022. He is listed for the ninth time in a row.

Great influence across disciplinary boundaries

Meyer-Lindenberg is listed in the “Cross-Field” category, which represents influence across disciplinary boundaries. He develops novel treatment methods for severe mental disorders, especially schizophrenia. To do this, Meyer-Lindenberg uses multimodal imaging, genetics and environmental sensing techniques to characterize brain networks that underlie risk for mental illness and cognitive dysfunction.

Over 6,900 scientists worldwide identified as highly influential

Publications are considered to be “highly cited” if, among other things, they are among the “top 1 percent” of the publications most cited by colleagues in a particular scientific field. This is considered an indication of the influence of a publication. For the current list, publications from the years 2011 to 2021 were included in the evaluation.
6,938 researchers worldwide are on this year’s list. The largest number of scientists listed in 2022 continues to work in the USA (2,764), followed by China (1,169) and the UK (579). Germany ranks fourth with 369 highly cited scientists, ahead of Australia (337). These five countries together account for more than two-thirds of all Highly Cited Researchers. They are followed by Canada (226), the Netherlands (210), France (134), Switzerland (112) and Singapore (106). The company Clarivate specialises in the analysis of scientific data and has published the list of the most highly cited scientists every year since 2014.
