Nayman S. DFG - Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft NA 2155/1-1 : Subtypes of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: Network analyses of temporal symptom trajectories and the role of sex hormones. 11/2025-10/2028.
The ICD-11- and DSM-5-criteria for PMDD acknowledge the intraindividual variability in symptom severity across menstrual cycles, but fail to address possible heterogeneity in exact temporal trajectories and related pathomechanisms across individuals and symptom clusters. PMDD has often been treated as a homogeneous condition across individuals and stable over cycles in both clinical and research contexts, overlooking critical aspects of its complexity. The overarching goal of this study is to take a more nuanced and mechanism-based approach, using dynamic network models, to quantify inter- and intra-individual variability in PMDD symptomatology and hormone sensitivity. This approach acknowledges the possibly dynamically interacting symptoms of PMDD and will help to move towards precision psychiatry and personalized treatment for PMDD.
