The Role of Microglial Activation in Alcohol Use Disorder

My research focuses on the contribution of alcohol-induced microglial activation to the development of habitual and goal-directed behaviour in alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using a rodent model of chronic intermittent ethanol exposure, I am investigating how withdrawal-induced neuroinflammation, particularly in the dorsomedial and dorsolateral striatum, affects behavioural control. I am also exploring whether psilocybin, a serotonergic psychedelic with anti-inflammatory properties, can modulate this activity and restore goal-directed behaviour. The ultimate goal of this work is to identify novel therapeutic targets for improving AUD outcomes.
